Where it applies

Applies to parcel, e-commerce, LTL, truckload, pallet and retail distribution. The test item is the final packaged-product configuration, not an isolated piece of packaging material.

What the evidence needs to show

  • Procedures can include conditioning, vibration, drop, impact, compression and atmosphere
  • Allowable product and package damage must be defined before testing
  • Product, package or distribution changes can require retesting

Build the evidence in this order

  1. Record final package dimensions, weight and construction
  2. Confirm distribution channel and hazards
  3. Select the ISTA procedure and acceptance criteria
  4. Test, inspect after opening and document improvements

Common misunderstandings

  • ISTA testing is not a guarantee of damage-free performance on every real route
  • Modified procedures can support development but may not qualify for an ISTA certification mark
