REACH Testing: SVHC Screening & Annex XVII Restrictions
Build a chemical test scope around your product and material composition.

01 / WHEN TO USE IT
Materials & finished articles
- A buyer requests substance information for products supplied to Europe.
- You need to investigate a particular material or chemical concern.
- An existing report needs review after a material or requirement change.
Understand the service in detail
REACH-related questions depend on what is supplied, what materials it contains and how it is used. A textile accessory, a plastic component and a chemical mixture do not automatically need the same assessment. TTS helps define the product question before selecting an analytical programme: for example, a buyer’s substance specification, selected restricted substances or a Candidate List investigation. The brief records the reference requirements and date so that the meaning of the report remains clear when product materials or regulatory lists change.

02 / A CLOSER LOOK
Candidate List screening and restriction testing answer different questions.
Open a checkpoint to see the evidence recorded and how it informs your decision.

01SVHC Candidate List
Identify the Candidate List reference date and the articles or materials covered by the request.
A dated list avoids an ambiguous “REACH compliant” statement when the list changes. Do not assume a historic fixed substance count remains current.
02Annex XVII restrictions
Map the material, product use and exposure conditions to relevant restriction entries, such as those concerning certain dyes, metals or plasticisers.
A broad SVHC screen does not automatically address every use-specific restriction. The applicability conditions matter as well as the substance name.
03Component-level traceability
Describe distinct articles, coatings, colours and material suppliers, and agree the sample preparation and grouping.
One favourable result on a material cannot automatically represent a different colour, coating or supplier.
04Supply-chain evidence
Combine relevant analytical findings with supplier information and the product’s intended use.
Testing supports the evidence question; communication, notification or other obligations depend on the actual product and supply-chain role.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
A decorative coating changes the assessment.
- !
The situation
A finish or material variant changes.
- ◎
What to record
Review product use, affected components and the applicable restriction.
- ↗
The next decision
Define the evidence needed for the actual variant.
Read the full scenario
Illustrative example: a metal accessory is offered in several finishes, but the supplier provides a report for only one finish. Identify the underlying metal, coating system and intended skin contact for each variant. The test brief can then cover the relevant material and use-specific question, rather than treating every finish as represented by the same report.
03 / STANDARDS & REQUIREMENTS
The rule.
The scope.
The evidence.
Applicability and editions are confirmed for your product, market and project date.
REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 / Annex XVII
Restriction entries include conditions for particular substances, mixtures, articles or uses. Select applicable entries in the testing brief.
Official source & scopeSVHC Candidate List
Candidate List status can trigger obligations for articles. Record the list date and distinguish analytical coverage from wider supply-chain duties.
Official source & scope04 / THE WORKING PROCESS
From your brief
to your next step.
01Prepare the brief
Describe the product and share the buyer’s request or known substance concern.
02Start the work
Confirm the reference requirements, material coverage and analytical approach.
03Examine & record
Submit traceable samples with the agreed supporting information.
04Review & follow up
Review results against the brief and identify follow-up questions for the supply chain.
Content guide; the agreed service determines the final deliverable.
05 / YOUR DELIVERABLE
A basis for
your next decision.
Results for the agreed substance scope, with sample identification.
How to use the result
Use the report to support supplier discussions and the product’s substance evidence. Testing a selected list does not by itself resolve every REACH obligation; the wider assessment depends on the product and your role in the supply chain.
06 / Discuss your project
What to send for a quotation
- Product description, photographs and material composition.
- Buyer specification or the precise substance question.
- Existing test reports, supplier information and proposed sample variants.
Practical questions
Can I order a fixed-number “REACH test package”?
Ask which dated list and restriction entries it covers. A package name or substance count is not a complete description of the material, methods and requirements assessed.
Can I request testing against my buyer’s restricted-substance list?
Yes. Share the complete list and limits for a review of methods, sample requirements and available laboratory scope.
